National Museum in Warsaw

The National Museum in Warsaw was originally founded in 1862 as the Museum of Fine Arts and is currently one of the oldest art museums in the country. After Poland regained its independence in 1918, the National Museum was ascribed a prominent role in the plans for the new state and its capital city of Warsaw, and the Modernist building in which it currently resides was erected in 1927–1938. Today, the National Museum in Warsaw boasts a collection numbering around 815 000 works of art from Poland and abroad as well as 35 000 objects in deposit, from ancient times to the present including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, coins, as well as utilitarian objects and design. Apart from the Main Building located in the heart of Warsaw, the National Museum in Warsaw operates in four branches: Xawery Dunikowski Museum of Sculpture at the Królikarnia Palace, Poster Museum at Wilanów, Radziwiłł Palace in Nieborów and Romantic Park in Arkadia, Museum of Interiors in Otwock Wielki

Prof. Łukasz GawełActing Director

Prof. Łukasz Gaweł – theatrologist specialising in managing cultural heritage and public cultural institutions. Lecturer and scholar at the Jagiellonian University, production manager in the Kluszczyński Publishing House in Cracow (1994-2005), Deputy Head (2008-2012), then Head (2012-2016) of the Institute of Culture at the Faculty of Management and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University. Between 2016 and 2019 he was the Deputy Director for Strategy, Development and Communications of the National Museum in Cracow. Since 2019 he has been the Acting Director of the National Museum in Warsaw. Author of numerous publications concerning cultural management as well as the „Practical Course of Photography” and Stanisław Wyspiański biography - ”Stanisław Wyspiański. Na chęciach mi nie braknie”. In his work he is particularly interested in using cultural heritage in the context of preserving the authenticity of the site and the issue of modern museum exhibitions.
